Executive Director Proposal
Background
At the 2007 Annual Meeting of SSSA in Albuquerque, the Southwestern Social Science Council (the elected leadership of the Southwestern Social Science Association) unanimously proposed changes to the SSSA Constitution and Bylaws to create the position of an Executive Director for the association. The proposed changes will be voted on by the membership at the General Business meeting in Las Vegas.
The possibility of an Executive Director position has been discussed and researched by ad hod committees for several years, and this year, motions were accepted to move the association toward a vote on creating the position. In Albuquerque, the chair of the Budget & Financial Policies Committee, Eddie Weller, presented the results of a financial feasibility study regarding a new Executive Director position. The study argues that the Executive Director is financially feasible.
The Motion
The specific motion (unanimously approved on a roll call vote) is:
“that the SSSA Council will place before the membership the constitutional and by laws changes necessary to create the position of Executive Director and eliminate the positions of Convention Director, Site Selection Director, Membership Director, Exhibits Director and Workshop Director. These changes will not take effect until an Executive Director has been hired by the SSSA Council.”

Article XII of the current constitution contains three provisions for constitutional changes; the Council authorizes use of the second provision:

Proposed Changes to the SSSA Bylaws
The proposed changes to the Bylaws are in this document (pdf format).
Article VII of the current bylaws contain two provisions for bylaws changes:
Section 1. Amendments to the Bylaws may be proposed by members of the Southwestern Social Science Association Council or by a petition of at least fifty members of the Association.
Section 2. The Bylaws may be amended by a majority affirmative vote of the Southwestern Social Science Council, or by a majority of the members in attendance at the annual General Business meeting of the Association.
