Executive Director
Southwestern Social Science Association
(SSSA)

 

The Executive Director (ED) of the Association is a part-time employee of the Southwestern Social Science Association and reports to the Executive Committee and the SSSA Council.  The ED is responsible for the following tasks:

Convention Site Selection and Negotiation:  Investigate potential sites for the annual meeting; recommend annual meeting sites to the Executive Committee and Southwestern Social Science Council; negotiate contracts with hotels or other annual meeting sites for final approval by the Executive Committee and SSSA Council; verify billing from annual meeting hotels; and, work with the hotels prior to and during the Annual Meeting.

Convention Organization:  Coordinate all local arrangements related to registration for the annual meeting of the Association; distribute hotel reservation information to members; direct and implement the registration and pre-registration for the annual meeting of the Association; and, collect registration and pre-registration fees and forward all monies collected to the Association Treasurer.

Convention Exhibits:  Promote the participation of exhibitors and publishers at the Association’s annual meeting; coordinate arrangements for the exhibition hall for the annual meeting; and, in conjunction with the journal publisher, solicit advertisers for the annual Association meeting program.

Memberships:  Promote membership in the Association and recommend appropriate policies related to membership promotion to the Southwestern Social Science Association Council; maintain an up-to-date data base of association members (in conjunction with the journal publisher); and, communicate with members via e-mail as needed.

Workshop Director:  Arrange all workshops for the annual meetings.

Website: Maintain the Association’s website www.sssaonline.org.

The Executive Director is expected to work closely with the officers and committees of the association, as well as attorneys, accountants, or other professionals engaged by the SSSA.  The Executive Director must be bonded, as paid for by the Association, and is a member of the Executive Committee and the SSSA Council, as well as the following association committees: Budget, Financial Policies and Planning, Membership, and Site Policy.

Qualifications: Earned Master’s or Doctoral Degree in one of the disciplines of the SSSA’s affiliate organizations, familiarity with the SSSA, and technology skills needed to manage the website and membership database (or access to staff support with these skills).

Review of applications will begin June 1st 2008. A completed application will include a cover letter addressing the above tasks, a current curriculum vitae and a three (3) references.
