2012 Annual Meeting
Date: April 4-7, 2012
Location: Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, California
Dear SSSA Colleagues,
I am excited to invite you to the first meeting of the SSSA in the Golden State, in what may be the most beautiful location the SSSA has ever ventured to. From the Manchester Hyatt you can see the bay and Coronado Island. Just a few blocks northwest is the USS Midway. Just to the east of our hotel is downtown and the famous Gaslamp Quarter, a center for entertainment and shopping. A short trolley ride away is the historic Old Town San Diego Historic Park. Father Junipero Serra founded the first of California’s missions here in 1769. Other attractions include major league baseball, the world famous San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld—all easily accessible from our hotel.
This year’s theme is Striking Gold in the Social Sciences: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Drawing on two disparate historical events, the theme reminds us that just as finding gold in California brought great wealth, the social sciences enrich not only individuals but also the world around us. Obviously “Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity” refers to the slogan of the French Revolution. Today these terms are both revolutionary and historical, still promising a better world where they are found. The struggles of so many people can be found in trying to achieve one or more of these ideals. Tracy Dietz and the Program Committee have assembled an outstanding program that often highlights these ideas. In addition President-elect Gary Copeland has put together some outstanding inter-disciplinary panels so that we can integrate our scholarship among the disciplines.
Make sure to plan on hearing one of California’s premier historians, Stanford University’s David M. Kennedy, the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus, Senior Fellow of the Woods Institute for the Environment, and Co-Director, The Bill Lane Center for the American West. His presentation will tie all of these together with “Water and the Making of the West: A Story of Success and Crisis.” It should be a good baptism into California for all of us.
Join us in striking gold in California!
Eddie Weller
