SSSA is a federation of , each covering its own social science discipline and interdisciplinary connections.
SSSA is governed by an , made up of elective offices, and the , which includes the Executive Committee and representatives of each affiliate.
The presidency of SSSA rotates between the largest affiliates and an open year. A person is nominated to become SSSA President, and makes a five-year commitment; in the first year that person is the SSSA Vice President and chairs the program committee for interdisciplinary and thematic panels; in the second year that person serves as SSSA President-Elect; in the third year, the person serves as SSSA President; in the fourth and fifth years, the person continues to sit on the Executive Council as a Past President.
